In 2015, before workplace SaaS platforms matured, Verizon faced a familiar but costly problem: thousands of meeting rooms booked but sitting empty, siloed calendars, no single source of truth, and no way to understand actual space utilization across their corporate campuses.There was no market-ready SaaS that could integrate scheduling, occupancy sensing, and portfolio-level reporting.The organization needed a smarter, more automated way to free unused spaces, reduce friction for employees, and give the real estate team data they never had before.

‍The Solution
We designed and deployed one of the first integrated room-booking platforms used at enterprise scale — combining a scheduling interface, sensor-based occupancy detection, and real-time release logic into a single digital-physical system.

The platform included:

Room Booking UI: Simple reservation tools integrated with existing calendars
Auto-Release Logic: CO₂ and PIR sensors identified unused rooms, automatically freeing them back into the system
Analytics & Portfolio Insights: Space utilization dashboards and campus heatmaps to guide real estate planning
On-Device Displays: At-room signage showing booking status, future schedule, and live availability
Integration Layer: Seamless connection to internal IT systems and workplace infrastructure

The results were immediate: higher room availability, reduced employee frustration, and the first reliable dataset on space usage across Verizon’s office network.
The system became a precursor to the modern “workplace experience” platforms that would emerge years later — and demonstrated how digital-physical sensing could reshape corporate real estate strategy.
